The Product Management Triad: How to Balance the Needs of Customers, Business, and Technology

Product managers are at the center of a war between the competing needs of their customers, their business, and their technology. Balancing the needs of this triad with limited resources, and ensuring no one area is neglected, is at the core of managing a successful product.

In some organizations, each group may have a representative who advocates for their needs. The Development Lead will advocate for the technology. The Customer will have the UX designer represent their needs. The Product Manager will hold the dual role of speaking for the business and being a tie-breaking vote. This can help ensure that all viewpoints are represented in the discussion of what to build. Sometimes this is not possible and the Product Manager must balance these needs alone.

The Customer

The customer is at the center of the Product Management Triad. Customer satisfaction is the ultimate metric of success for any product. Therefore, it is crucial for product managers to understand their customer’s pain points, needs, and requirements. They should gather feedback from users and continually iterate to meet evolving customer needs. Neglecting the customer’s needs will reduce platform usage, leading to a decrease in revenue.

The Business

The second pillar of the Product Management Triad is the business. A product that does not align with the company’s strategic vision or generate revenue is a failed product. As such, product managers must balance customer needs with the business’s goals. They should have a deep understanding of the business’s core competencies, and develop a product roadmap that aligns with the company’s strategic goals. Neglecting the business needs will result in reduced efficiencies, lost revenue, and potentially, a product that is not sustainable.

The Technology

The third pillar of the Product Management Triad is technology. Without a solid technological foundation, a product cannot succeed. Product managers need to ensure that their products are built on a secure, scalable, and maintainable technological foundation. Addressing technical debt, investing in infrastructure improvements, and using best practices for development are all essential to ensure technological stability. Neglecting the technology pillar can lead to increased bugs, a slowing down of development, and potential security concerns.

Balancing the Needs

Balancing the competing needs of the customer, business, and technology is no easy task. Product managers must constantly make difficult trade-offs, allocate resources appropriately, and adjust priorities based on the needs of the moment. The key to success is a deep understanding of each pillar of the Product Management Triad and how they interact with one another.

Here are some tips for product managers to balance the needs of the Product Management Triad:

  • Understand the needs of each stakeholder: Have a deep understanding of the needs of your customers, the business, and the technology team. This means gathering feedback from users, understanding the company’s strategic vision, and being familiar with the latest technological trends.
  • Set clear priorities: Be able to set clear priorities and make difficult trade-offs. This means deciding which features are most important to customers, which features are aligned with the company’s strategic vision, and which features are technically feasible.
  • Be flexible: The needs of the Product Management Triad are constantly changing. You need to be flexible and adaptable in order to meet these changing needs.
  • Be data-driven: Make decisions based on data, not only gut instinct. This means collecting and analyzing data about customer behavior, market trends, and technological capabilities. By using data to inform your decisions, you can make more informed choices that are more likely to be successful.
  • Be collaborative: Don’t try to do everything on your own. Build a team of experts from different disciplines, such as marketing, sales, engineering, and design. By working together, this team can create a product that meets the needs of all stakeholders.
